Education

I am a graduate from the University of Virginia with Bachelor's degrees in Anthropology and Women & Gender Studies with a concentration in Media Studies, with a GPA range of 3.55 - 3.9 in each field. In addition, I have recently been admitted into a PhD program in Cultural Anthropology that begins in Fall 2017. During my first two years at the University, I pursued a major in Psychology, which has given me a uniquely interdisciplinary perspective to education. Prior to attending the University of Virginia, I spent a year at New York University's Liberal Studies Program wherein I principally studied Creative Writing, Philosophy, and Social Foundations and made Dean's List. I have further experience abroad at an anthropological fieldwork site as a student researcher on indigenous rights and legal pluralism in Amazonian Peru. While in college, I was given full funding for a research project on indigenous communities and law in Peru, partial funding for a grant proposal on linguistics in Malta, and partial funding for a service learning project in Ecuador.

Experience

I currently work full-time as a college adviser, wherein I assist high school students with all college access services, ranging from college admissions essays to SAT/ACT prep to financial aid. I am very well-versed on the redesigned SAT and am very confident in my ability to tutor students for the SAT, ACT, as well as GRE. While working with my senior high school students, the average jump in cumulative SAT score has been 100 points. During high school, I graduated with a 4.0 unweighted GPA and scored in the 91st percentile in SAT Reading section and 88th percentile on the essay. I scored a 5 on my AP European History, AP Human Geography, AP English Literature, AP Psychology, and AP Government and Politics exams. On SAT Subject exams, I scored a 660 in Literature and 600 in U.S. History. Recently, I took the GRE and scored in the 90th percentile for Verbal and the 82nd percentile for Analytical Writing. In college, my courses included: Psychology, History, Anthropology, Archaeology, Creative Writing, Journalism, Communications, Linguistics, Religious Studies, Materials Science, Film Studies, Media Studies, Women and Gender Studies, Human Rights, Nonprofit Management, and Global Studies, to name a few of my favorites. In high school, I excelled in various History and English courses, as well as Marketing. I was president of my school's Marketing chapter and qualified for the international-level DECA competition for Marketing and School-Based Enterprise. Prior to my current job, I worked as a projectionist in a movie theater. I also interned for the UVa Women's Center, the International Rescue Committee, and Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection. I have been a contributor and literary editor to two publications on Grounds. In my spare time, I served as President of the Virginia Anthropology Society, an English as a Second Language Consultant, and Secretary of philanthropic organization Spread the Love. I would like to be a tutor because quite simply, I love learning and assisting others in their learning. I wish to pursue a PhD in Cultural Anthropology and until then, I would love to put my skills into practice with students who need assistance.

Hobbies

In college and throughout high school, I was a competition-level cheerleader. Last year, I coached Varsity and Junior Varsity cheerleading at the high school I work at, wherein I worked with 15-40 high school students at a time. Further, I danced for 13 years as well as spent some time doing gymnastics. Outside of athletics, I enjoy film, reading, hiking, traveling, and exploring the Downtown Mall. I am currently trying my hand at crafting with candles and cross-stitching. I have a six-year old sister and intermittently babysit for ages 5 through 15, and am used to working with students of all ages.
