Hobbies

Hello! My name's Mary and I'm from a small town just outside of Madison, Wisconsin. As you can probably guess, I'm still a Packers/Badgers/Brewers fan, so I'm sorry if this causes anyone some trouble! I was very fortunate to grow up in a small, close-knit community that put the welfare and success of its students very high on its list of values. As such, I was very involved in high school, participating in things like softball, volleyball, cross country, National Honor Society, class officer duties, and, perhaps my favorite, Science Olympiad. For those of you that don't know, Science Olympiad is a nationally based academic event for middle and high school students and has a variety of topics to participate in, anywhere from engineering events (my favorites: bridge building, bottle rocket and naked egg drop) to subject events (cell biology, astronomy, forensic science, environmental science, etc.) Throughout middle and high school I was very involved as a bridge builder (build the lightest bridge possible that can hold about 15 kilos of sand) and bottle rockets (lightest possible rocket that has the best flight time and can protect an uncooked egg) but I also participated in other events such as cell biology and water quality. I was fortunate enough to win a few state titles in bridge building and water quality, and these successes ultimately helped to cement my love of science. I continue to volunteer and coach for Science Olympiad whenever I can make it home over the holidays, but I also was able to volunteer for the regional event in Charlottesville this past spring. I want to continue volunteering and advocating for students in Science Olympiad because I want them to experience the triumphs, freedom and wisdom science can offer. When I'm not in lab or volunteering for Science Olympiad, I love to read, crochet (sure you can make fun of me for this--sometimes it does make me feel like a little old lady, haha) and cook. Even though I've been in the Charlottesville area for over a year now I still enjoy discovering new places, so feel free to give me any recommendations (restaurants, parks, you name it!). Additionally, I plan to one day make it back to Ecuador to visit my host family from when I studied abroad in undergrad, so if you're interested in speaking Spanish let me know and we can practice!
