I feel that effective tutoring should be a partnership between teacher and student. I work closely with students through my work at the University of Virginia (UVA), where I am completing a degree in Foreign Affairs and Women and Gender Studies. I am president of an organization that pairs college students with local high school students for the purpose of both mentoring and tutoring. This grouping forms relationships between the students and helps the younger ones more effectively prepare for college. I am currently working with UVA staff toward making the program into a college-level class. When tutoring, my favorite subject is English. In particular, I like to help students improve their essay-writing skills and prepare for SAT tests. I also prepare students for college and careers by helping them develop resumes.I have worked in several diverse situations, teaching Math and English to children in India, and have worked with third grade and pre-kindergarten students in elementary schools in low-income areas of the United States. Previously, I led lessons at a reading program for students who had recently been homeless. These positions have taught me empathy and to understand where a student is coming from and why they may be experiencing problems at home or at school.
