Mark P.
Private tutor in Charlottesville, VA
Education
I received my MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Virginia in May 2010. (GPA: 4.0) Before that, I earned my BA in English (with German minor) from the College of William and Mary in May 2007. (GPA: 3.8)
Experience
During graduate school, I tutored for three years in the University of Virginia's Writing Center, helping students with academic papers, application essays for graduate school, etc. That marked the beginning of my tutoring experience. In the summer of 2010, I taught two summer sessions of SAT Prep courses (4 Star Camps,) and after that, I tutored privately, part time, for many years, covering subject tests such as the SAT, GRE, and GMAT, as well as essay writing and geometry. I have nine years of teaching experience at the college level (at UVA, Tidewater Community College, and Saint Leo University,) including courses like Introduction to Academic Writing, Creative Writing, TV and the American Family, Women Artists in History, and Introduction to Fine Arts. I also spent one semester (Fall of 2010) substitute teaching in Albermarle country schools, and taught as a long term sub for a twelfth grade English teacher, at Greenrun High School in Virginia Beach (Spring of 2011.) Along with my time at 4 Star Camps, those early experiences helped introduce me to working with younger students. My test scores-- SAT: 1550 (when it was out of 1600,) and 2300 (on a practice test in the current 2400 format.) GRE: 1540

Hobbies
I read and write, both poetry and fiction, and my current literary interest is short stories. I also enjoy studying languages (I'm currently studying Tagalog,) playing soccer, gardening, traveling, hiking, biking, surfing, swimming, doing yoga--anything that engages my brain and body. Aside from that, I teach! In the classroom and on-line, one-on-one and in groups. My most recent new teaching experience was at Writer House, where I taught an evening poetry workshop.
