ExperienceI started tutoring elementary school age children when I was in high school at The Covenant School. Since then I've tutored all ages, including university students in Public Speaking. My primary area of interest is writing because I think being a strong writer helps across all subjects. I have also had the opportunity to tutor children who have mild disabilities as well as other learning related issues.
Tutoring is a chance for me to share what I love with younger students. Since I've been working on my masters degree, I've realized how important a lifetime love of learning is. Whether a middle schooler is frustrated in history class or a senior who wants help writing college application essays, I want to be there to help them feel good about their work.
I work in a style that is based on practice and encouragement. Everyone has different gifts and strengths, but even when things are difficult I want to help my students feel confident about what they are working on. If tutoring feels like just another chore after school, things aren't going to improve that much. That's why it's my goal to use humor, encouragement, and engaging activities to help students succeed.
During high school I received a 750 verbal score on my SAT and received a 4 or 5 in AP English, AP US History and AP European History. During my most recent practice tests for the SAT, I've received scores of 800 in the verbal section.
I've tutored at the university level in public speaking for all types of speeches including persuasive, informative, demonstrative, special occasion and debate. I have also tutored undergraduate students in writing, study skills, and various subjects.
I've had the opportunity to study with some amazing writers such as Gerard Woodward, Frances Leviston and Sophie Robinson who have achieved international success in poetry and prose.
HobbiesI'm a book nerd who loves spending time outside. My hobbies include ceramics, rowing, baking and traveling. I spent the better part of last year in England doing my coursework for my MA in Poetry. Animals are one of my great loves, and I love spending time hanging out with my parent's two crazy dogs.
My poetry has been published in several online literary magazines.
